My Favorite Part of 'Like a Virgin'

It has to be the little "Hey!" after the first line of the chorus. It's the part of the song that I look forward to. So I started thinking about why I like it, and here's what I came up with:

  • I like sudden falsetto. I'm thinking of the chorus of "Timebomb" (special note on that link: I was at that show, surrounded by lesbians) by the Old 97s. This "Hey" probably qualifies.
  • The timing is great. Like here's the inner monologue of the song's protagonist: "Like a virgin -- hey! what's that thing in me?! ow! -- touched for the very first time."
  • I am coming to terms with the fact that I have some kind of fetish for extra-lyrical utterances in songs. OMG, I heart counting off, especially in the middle of a song. I'm not talking about just-filling-up-time Eddie Vedder-style whoas, though. I draw the line there.

I always get confused when I talk about your blog, mistaking "like a virgin" for "like a prayer." Maybe you should compare those two songs.

I wonder if you'll similarly enjoy "Like a Prayer's" interjections by the gospel choir.
